We are Hawk and Venus, 21st century Amanita mushroom Soma Shamans from the Pacific Northcoast dedicated to the religious, medicinal, recreational, and sacramental use of the mystical mushroom, Amanita muscaria. As the husband and wife authors of "Sacred Soma Shamans," we didn't just study the subject, or offer opinions -- we live the ecstasy of Divine Soma, a mushroom the ancients worshipped and modern man fears.

Since 1979, when we shared our first kettle of fresh Amanita muscaria tea on a magical San Francisco evening, we spend several exhilarating months a year hunting, picking and preparing sacred Soma together. We use fresh Amanita in season, dry or freeze whole mushrooms and brew gallons of tea to store for our daily sacrament for the rest of the year.

Hawk, High Priest and Master Soma Shaman

Hawk is considered the world's foremost authority on dosing, picking and preparation of Amanita mushrooms. As a Soma High Priest and Master Soma Shaman he has 30 years experience with Amanita in all phases from picker and preparer to prophet. A shaman in the truest definition of the word, for he has a special connection with the mushroom as a visionary catalyst and spiritual ally.

Living outside alone for many years, he practiced severe austerities that purified him and led him to the Tree of Life where he met the Spirit of Soma. Guided by his spiritual advisers of Tarot and Soma, he found his way through the mystical world of Amanita, past the life and death of shaman rebirth journeys to the grand ecstasy of Heaven--Soma. Venus, Prophetess and High Priestess of Soma

Venus, our High Priestess, started regular use 28 years ago. Her consumption is almost daily in much lower dosages. She prefers Soma as a euphoric energizer, a medicinal and uses higher doses for painting of our personal Tarot deck and other visionary art.

Magical Mushroom Adventure

We went on a three-year expedition (1999-2002) traveling around Northern California and the Pacific Northwest on a magical mushroom adventure. We were given a mission to bring the spirit of Soma back to modern man, so we began putting the Secrets of Soma video/DVD together in 1999 to historically document our own 21st century use of Soma as a spiritual sacrament with proper instructions for use in our time in history. Then we began writing our book, Sacred Soma Shamans, to include even more information, instruction and inspiration.

The Benefits of Sacred Soma

Hawk says, "I advocate primarily medicinal and recreational use since the average person isn't ready for occult training with Soma and isn't interested in obtaining visionary powers or mystic levels of consciousness.

Recreational use is fine because Soma is the greatest energizer, high, anti-depressant and suppressant of fear, anxiety and pain known to man. It's perfect for obtaining high levels of physical energy and greatly increased stamina. It also relaxes the face muscles and flushes blood through the veins thereby making you look and feel younger. Soma is like a big soft pillow from God to lay your head on.

Depending on the potency, dose and type of Amanita and the users consciousness, Soma can be either a great physical energizer or spiritual guide.

Soma was invaluable as an appetite suppressant during my extensive fast. As a spiritual austerity, I fasted every other day for four and a half years; fasting ten days for each solstice and equinox during that time, for a total of 202 fast days a year for four and a half years, using Soma every day as a medicinal appetite suppressant and spirit, mind and body energizer."

Visionary Consciousness

As our clan's High Priest and Prophet of Soma, my personal consumption at this time averages three times daily, (as in the Rig Veda,) I've since estimated times taken over 10,000.

I've been doing this for 30 years with one year off when I studied the sacred Vedas, Upanishads and the holy Zend Avesta for information about Soma, as well as many books on Amanita and contemporary mushroom shamanism.

I use Soma primarily for visionary consciousness obtained through the medium of Tarot to see the future and lead our clan and also as an incredible physical energizer and masculine stimulant.

Types of Amanita

Amanita Phalloides

There are many varieties and colors of Amanita and though I've taken every color, white, green, yellow, orange, red and brown, I would only recommend using red and orange (positively identified Amanita muscaria and formosa) to the initiate for all others must be chosen and prepared carefully in order to ensure a pleasant, safe experience. We use only our own shamanically handled Soma. Vendor mushroom is on the level of rat poison and is worthless crap. (See FAQ for more details.)

Our long term use of Soma has shown us first hand that there are many ways to prepare and take Soma for different activities and desired results. We've learned how to prepare them according to their individual vibration, for every mushroom has its own vibration, consciousness, life force and intelligence.

Spiritual Consciousness

To truly know the essence of Soma, one cannot merely read an essay or book, dissect it, classify it, or ingest too little or too much Amanita, one must be on a pure level of intelligence and spiritual consciousness in order to follow the disciplines required by this heavenly guide to discover the key to it's sacred spirit.

It took many years of severe austerities, such as fasting every other day for four and a half years, freezing winter ocean baths, kundalini yoga, and living as a nature mystic hermit to be able to experience the true spirit of Soma to obtain High Priesthood and become a "Somaized" Prophet.

To devoted and highly evolved practitioners who treat Soma with pure love and respect and never corrupt or defile its essence, the spirit of Soma will bestow a super intelligence of the mysteries of life.

Such a gift is the reward for those who love Soma.

Soma is also the gift of life and when taken correctly, there is no physical discomfort, nausea, "nightmares" or hangovers. There are no drawbacks.

There is no physical addiction when properly measured with temperance.
